THE ORIGIN OF TRACHT
By the way, do you know that the origin of traditional costume actually lies on the Theresienwiese? At the time of the first Wiesn, i.e. the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810, traditional costume - as we know it today - was still a long way off.
Before the famous horse race took place in honor of the bride and groom, the royal family was honored in the form of a procession of 16 pairs of children dressed in traditional costumes of the Wittelsbach dynasty, the nine Bavarian counties, and other regions. These costumes were specially made for the occasion, and it was the first time that Bavarian costumes were used for the Kingdom of Bavaria.
THE TRIUMPH OF THE DIRNDL
The invention of the dirndl dress shortly before 1900 was originally a purely urban fashion phenomenon. From around 1870, the dirndl dress became established among the upper classes of the urban summer public as a typically "rural" dress.
The Jewish brothers Moritz and Julius Wallach from Bielefeld, who founded the Munich Folk Art House in 1890, were instrumental in this. The worldwide breakthrough of the dirndl came in 1910, when the Wallach brothers outfitted the country costume procession for the 100th anniversary of the Oktoberfest at unprecedented expense.
The background to this was the contrast, repeatedly reported in local literature, between the supposedly natural, unspoiled and genuine country folk and the artificiality and depravity of city society.
As early as the end of the 18th century, there was a trend in courtly society to withdraw from the etiquette and strictness of court life in rural surroundings. The women's clothing worn for this purpose was based on peasant traditional costume in a romantic, reminiscent interpretation.
The invention of the dirndl dress marked one of the most important starting points for today's understanding of alpine costume.
